Set in the GNU’s tranquil grounds next to the city’s current Fresh Acton precinct, University House is truly one of Canberra’s unique locations and experiences. From its beginnings wholly as a residential college for professors and graduate students, University House has grown to host a vibrant hotel, with desirable and casual dining, functions and events spaces, and an excellent bar and cellar. It is the place where the University meets and celebrates, and where guests and visitors experience the benefits of a boutique hotel with immediate access to the rich cultural and intellectual life of Australia’s National University. With a history rich in academic prestige and ceremony, University House guests and visitors are treated to a unique, club like experience that was once the exclusive privilege of eminent academics and celebrated dignitaries. It was home to all the research students and professors of the University at the time. Very much styled on the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge it was, for a time, referred to as Oxbridge in the Bush. The Eccles tapestry celebrates the work of Sir John Eccles who won a Nobel prize for his accomplishments in neurophysiology: The foreground depicts, in black, a motoneuron with a micro electrode the colored background is based on a digital image of the spinal inter neuron injected with the fluorescent Lucifer yellow dye. The Flores tapestry celebrates the work of Lord Howard Flores for his Nobel prize associated with the University for his work on antibiotics and depicts the action of Penicillin on a petri dish. It celebrates the Japan prize awarded to Professor Frank Jenner for his significant labor in the eradication of smallpox and shows a bifurcated needle applying the vaccine to an electron mircrograph of a variola virus distant from a specimen from the final obvious case of smallpox in the world. The tapestry shows a isolated piece of the Universe, overlaid with the discovery images of his team’s first distant supernova. The ViceChancellor appoints a Master, conventionally a senior academic of the university, who is responsible for the academic and operational oversight of the House. The Master is advised by a Board of Fellows, and assisted by an Operations' Manager and their staff. The Board meets regularly throughout the year, and provides advice to the Master on the packed range of activities conducted by University and Graduate House.
