YWCA Canberra is a feminist, secular, notforprofit organization that has provided community services and represented women’s issues in Canberra since 1929. We work in the areas of children’s services, community development, housing, youth services, personal and professional training, women’s leadership and advocacy. As a feminist organization, YWCA Canberra believes that everyone has the right to contribute to, and share equally in, the benefits of the community’s social, cultural and economic development. We are seeking passionate and committed individuals who can assist us in creating laughter education and protection environments for children attending our School Age Protection Services (before and after school care) in the Canberra region Remain reading. As such, YWCA Canberra became increasingly involved in the provision of low cost child care. Children and young people have the skills and attributes to create a better future. YWCA Canberra operates lower a mighty governance model and is governed by a board of 12 company directors who define the strategic goals of the organization. Julia is a strong feminist, committed to supporting young women to be huge leaders. Betty’s powerful financial expertise has been a welcome addition to the Board, and her continuing involvement in the Finance Committee is of great benefit. Heidi has extensive work experience in the ACT community sector including small, specialist organizations and temperate sized generalist organizations, where she has worked in project design, program management, policy development, budget management, client information and support services, community development, and education and awareness. She has a strong interest in women and leadership. These awards recognize distinguished practice busy with young people in the ACT and surrounding area. Frances, who is passionate about gender equality, was recognized for her leadership and advocacy on behalf of Canberra women and girls. Succeeding a prosperous career in IT, accounting and public administration, Betty applied her financial and management expertise to mentor and train other women. aspire is an early intervention leadership program to urge young women in years 7 and 8 of lofty school who are at risk of disengaging with education.

During the war years, members of the YWCA were very energetic in fund raising, organizing war aid activities, joining groups like the Voluntary Assist Detachment, and they initiated begin house’ entertainment for servicemen. The association also opened its beginning Canberra women’s hostel in 1942, first our lengthy involvement in providing accommodation to women and girls. In 1945, the YWCA of Canberra responded to calls nationally for a greater youth’ voice in the movement by making several organizational changes, including moving its meeting times so that young, busy women could attend. In the 1950s, the organization also ran an Open House’ on Sundays for newly arrived migrants, providing friendship and services to newcomers to Canberra. The process is both exhilarating and exhausting but we have no intention of halting. It was during this time that kid minding was offered alongside the Y’s ever increasing range of classes and activities, a foreshadowing of the later expansion of child concern within YWCA Canberra’s work. There was an increased focus on occupied with young people in the 1960s, which saw the YWCA of Canberra create a youth department with its own committee and finances, and employ experienced and competent youth workers. While the labor was flourishing, the changing social landscape of the 1970s was challenging the foundations of the YWCA, both in Australia and at world level.
